Well after much hard work i came up with this as my third entry for Sketch Tavern's Mega Battle. Topic was "Michelangelo sculpts David" and hope i portrayed that well. Pushed myself to try a few new things with this: doing more with lights and shadows, pushing the perspective a bit, hope it turned out okay. Win or lose it's been a lot of fun and i feel i've learned a lot. Enjoy and let me know what you think
Daily DeviationGiven 2007-12-16In Round 3 by *rebel-penguin the lighting gives it a lot of mood, but the angle and the night sky suggests something deeper: grandeur and effort involved at the task at hand. Creating art, just like many artists here at DA do. (Suggested by =hya and Featured by `Einion) |

but it's so CRISP and... the details in certain parts really show- like the ladder and the hair thing of the statue-
the lighting from the fire... the cartoony look is nice too- the sculptor has silly legs- hehe

Besides the fact that I don't have a heart, I'm a normal person
Ha, and I like how the legs of the statue haven't been fully finished yet. Michelangelo has a lot of work to do. xD

Before you fly you have to learn to crawl,
You can't see Heaven when you're standing tall.
To get the whole sky on the ground you have to lie.

I've actually seen David in the Uffizi in Florence. He is actually quite tall and is raised up on a platform. He was designed to be put above a giant doorway so this is most likely the perspective that most people would be seeing him. Michelangelo even purposefully enlarged the top half of his body, head and hand, to compensate for shrinking into the distance because he was so tall.
One of the things that I loved about this piece was that I could feel the star in the sky moving in their rotation. I could FEEL it.
It's a stunning piece. I wish you the best of luck. Make sure to let us all know how you do. I'll throw ya a party!
Someday you'll have to give me an tutorial in Illustrator. I just way too frustrated.
My only problem is the head, I'm not sure if its the perspective or it is a personal style thing, but its not big enough a problem to mess with the whole thing.
Great work
